What it means to be an Optician

“Anyone can sell a pair of glasses. Being an Optician is something entirely different”

More Than a Job Title
Being an optician goes far beyond a simple job title. Yet, there are still common misconceptions about what we do. You may have heard:
“Opticians just sell glasses.”
“Opticians just follow what the doctor prescribes.”
“Opticians are salespeople first.”
Are any of these really true? Certainly not.
Opticianry is a profession built around optics, mathematics, anatomy, precision, medical knowledge, problem-solving, and most importantly, patient care. We take a prescription and turn it into a customized visual solution that fits not only the patient’s needs, but also their lifestyle, personality, and expectations.
Patricia Serrano, a New Jersey-licensed optician, said it best: “Opticians are not salespeople. We are healthcare professionals.”
And that distinction matters. Being an optician means understanding that what we do is about far more than choosing a frame and placing an order. We use our knowledge and expertise to help someone see their best, feel their best, and ultimately experience a better quality of life.
We Are Problem Solvers
A prescription can be perfect on paper and still result in a poor visual experience if the eyewear isn’t properly fitted. That’s where our expertise comes in.
A patient’s prescription, lifestyle, facial shape and eye anatomy, visual demands, previous eyewear experience, and budget all play a role in the solutions we recommend. There is rarely a one-size-fits-all answer.
We are the ones who troubleshoot the complex complaints: “I can’t see with my new glasses.” “These glasses feel weird.” “Something just doesn’t feel right.”
We investigate. We ask questions. We check measurements, fit, lenses, positioning, and expectations. Sometimes the solution is simple; sometimes it requires a deeper understanding of optics, medical conditions and the patient’s individual needs.
Being an optician means being a problem solver. We don’t just dispense eyewear—we figure out how to make it work. What was a complex situation with a patient that came up? How did you resolve it? What tools/knowledge did you use? An Optician doesn’t simply fill a prescription – we find a solution.
We Are Part Scientist, Part Stylist
In our profession, we must understand prescriptions, lens technologies, optics, light perception, and how seemingly simple measurements can make or break a patient’s visual experience.
But our job doesn’t stop with the technical side of eyewear. We are also the patient’s personal stylist.
We consider what colors, shapes, sizes, and materials complement each individual patient. We take into account their facial features, coloring, personality, lifestyle, and personal style. We stay current with trends while also knowing when a timeless option may be the better choice.
We have to understand the science behind how someone sees while also understanding the art of how someone wants to be seen.
That combination of technical knowledge and personal connection is what makes opticianry unique.
All of this mind you, seems to happen within minutes. Most busy offices are seeing 50 patients or more a day.
Take Pride In What We Do
Be proud of the knowledge and passion you show in our field. Don’t be afraid to keep learning and growing. We are our patients Yoda. It is our responsibility to recommend what is right for each patient and educate them on what they need. Don’t ever undervalue what you do day to day and remember what we do affects how someone sees the world, and our interactions influence how patients view the entire eye-care experience.

I couldn't agree more with your blog, Emily. And you even threw in a Star Wars reference! Love it!❤️
